One of the oldest established villages in England. The first Ancient Britons settled there believing it was a sacred/spiritual place. St Peter's Church is the oldest to be found in Warwickshire. Originally, named Wudu Tun (estate in the woods) it was founded by the Saxons in the 700's. Eventually the name Wudu Tun formed the word Wootton, whereas Wawen derived from the last Saxon thane Wagen, who ruled the estate before the Norman invasion. Near to the church is Wootton Hall www.ukparks.com built in 1637 and home to many Catholic families.
The Stratford canal runs through Wootton Wawen as well as the Stratford Road (A3400) to Stratford and North to Birmingham. The River Alne runs over the weir past the Old Mill and Priory. The village has a local school, railway station www.en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wootton_Wawen_railway_station, Village Hall www.warwickshire.gov.uk, the popular "Bulls Head" and "Navigation Inn" public houses, village stores and the anglo-welsh of the Navigation Inn www.anglowelsh.co.uk. Wootton is within easy access of Henley-in-Arden, Stratford-upon-Avon and Solihull benefiting from the amenities that these places have to offer.
